Hope Is Not Foolish

It is a flame that dances in the wind of uncertainty, fragile yet unyielding.

Hope is the heartbeat of the universe pulsing through us, reminding us that even in the darkest, coldest soil, seeds stir and orient toward the light.

To feel hope is to align with life itself, which endlessly renews, transforms, and reaches for the possible.

It is the song of the horizon, where dawn eternally promises its return.

Hope may ache with vulnerability, but it is also the quiet courage of a tree rooting deeper, of a river carving through stone, of stars birthing their brilliance in the void.

  • Benjamin De Pauw, Founding Council Member

Benjamin’s words touch me deeply. They remind me why I keep showing up for democracy, even when the news is bleak or the odds feel long. Hope isn’t a flimsy feeling; it’s a knowing. A calling. It tells me that what I long for – a thriving, inclusive democracy – is possible.

At Democracy Is Us, we’re learning to live democracy – as a daily practice, as something that belongs to every one of us.

It is small, steady actions. It’s learning how government works and what we can do to change what isn’t working. It’s talking with our neighbors – even the ones we don’t agree with – because community starts with connection. It’s deciding what kind of country we want to build and then showing up, together, to ensure that it happens.

Living democracy can include marching in the streets but doesn’t include waiting for some hero to fix things for us.

This work isn’t flashy, but it’s powerful. It’s baking cookies for a school board meeting or teaching your kids about voting. It’s running for office or volunteering to help others register to vote. It’s asking better questions and listening for the answers.

I believe in my core that we can create the world we ache for. A country where everyone feels they belong. Where we act out of love and not fear. Where democracy isn’t something distant or fragile but something we live, breathe and build every day.

So here’s my invitation to you: Let your hope become action. Start small. Start today. Find one thing that calls to you and take the next step. Together, we can make hope not just a feeling but a way of life.

Because the promise of democracy is this: It works when we work. And it starts right here, with us.

Everyone can change the world.
